        Johannes van den Avele (1655 Amsterdam - 1727 Stockholm): Synedrium Magnum, "the great council", "the supreme court", from a book, 18th century, Etching Technique: Etching on Paper Inscription: Signed lower right in the printing plate "J.v.d. Avele inv. et f." and inscribed below "Synedrium Magnum". Depicted is a court trial in the council chamber. The great council consisted of 71 members, already seated here in a semicircle, the president in the middle, at either end the secretaries. The synedrium passed laws and judged war and peace. Carte gravée, eau-forte sur double page. Pli central, quelques tâches. 47 x 35 cm. Cette splendide carte biblique hollandaise de la Terre Sainte illustre l'exode d'Egypte et les pérégrinations des enfants d'Israël dans le désert. Canaan est représenté divisé en douze tribus. La partie inférieure de la carte est minutieusement gravée avec une scène du campement et Moïse recevant les dix commandements au mont. Sinaï. Au sommet se trouve une scène de la parole de Dieu éclairant le monde avec Moïse, Salomon, les apôtres et les évangélistes. La carte était basée sur la carte de Visscher de 1650

Very rare first edition of a beautiful panoramic view of the gardens of the estate “Sorghvliet” in The Hague depicting i.a. the “Catshuis” (nowadays the official residence of the Prime Minister of the Netherlands) & the “Scheveningse Zee Straat” (incl. a small view of Scheveningen in the background). A second issue was published by J. Covens & C. Mortier (Amsterdam, ca. 1730). – Vertical fold in the middle (as publ.). Sl. foxed/ browned in upper part, but else in good condition (not examined out frame).

Japanese, closing tears (on folds) and some sm. holes (sl. affecting text); the engraver's address and a leeboard next to it erased/ covered w. black ink. = F.M. 2728: "Fraaije pl. (...) Zeldzaam." Fine view of the departing fleet that would bring Maria Stuart from Briel (seen in the background) to her husband, the newly proclaimed King Willem III of England. SEE ILLUSTRATION PLATE CXLIII.

        Aveele, J. van den (±1655-1727). (Protestant sufferings caused by Catholics from 1414 to 1679). Engraved broadside, divided in 12 parts, 1698, totally measuring 42x52 cm., w. "J. vanden Avele inv. et fec." and Dutch and English captions engr. in the plate, - Sl. yellowed; with various horizontal and vertical folds; left blank margin reattached on verso w. sellotape. = Very rare. Not in F.M. The centre shows a reference to the legend of Pope Alexander III and the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarossa on the left hand side. On the right hand side it shows an allegorical representation of a Jesuit holding an open book titled "Concilie van Trenten". Surrounding are various scenes showing the sufferings of protestants, i.a.: "Vervolginghe aen de Gereformeerde inde Nederlanden en op verscheijde andere Plaetsen" and "Moortoneel inde Valije van Piemont en aen de Vroome Waldense in Jaer 1655".
