Atanasov has repeatedly painted from sketches he made during his trips to Italy, Portugal or the United States. This work presents an abstract composition of a Mediterranean balcony in bold colors. The contrast between surface and illusion of space, between free brushstrokes and closed geometric form is characteristic of Atanasov's work. The painting is in good condition. It is signed, dated, titled and inscribed with dimensions 'Atanasov 1982 / 8 (circled) "Italian Autumn" / 35 x 30 cm' on the verso. The frame shows minor wear. The framed work measures 38 x 33 cm, the stretcher frame measures 35 x 30 cm. Peter Atanasov (b. 1949) Peter Atanasov was born in Bratislava in 1949. He started as a draftsman, but soon discovered the limitations of this medium, choosing the canvas and the brush instead. A defining moment was an encounter with the American art theorist Clement Greenberg, whose theses on contemporary art inspired Atanasov to work more experimentally. Yet the artist never abandoned the painterly tradition. His work is characterized by the ongoing dialogue between color surface and space. Recurring symbols can be found in exotic pictorial worlds oscillating between dream and reality. Today the artist lives and works in Vienna where here he has created several works in public space. Moreover Atanasov has participated in numerous exhibitions in Austria and abroad.
