      Nov. 16, 2024

Bartholomeus Assteyn, Still life with Peaches and Grapes on a Table

      Est: €40,000 - €50,000

Signed and dated lower left: B. Assteyn 1631 Assteyn was born in Dordrecht, where his father also worked as a painter. Johannes Bosschaert from Utrecht and Balthaser van Ast from Middelburg influenced his artistic path even more than his father, with whom he initially learnt. Like them, Assteyn specialised in fruit and flower still lifes, his surviving œuvre is quite limited. The present painting was created in the year in which Assteyn was first mentioned in the Dordrecht Guild of St Luke. He was almost 24 years old at the time. This work is characterised by an emphatic sobriety that is typical of him. On the left, a pewter plate with peaches and foliage is depicted, while on the right, two bunches of grapes lie directly on the wooden tabletop. The lighting is diffuse, the colours are tonal and restrained, almost tending towards the monochrome. However, it is precisely this brittleness that characterises this artist's paintings in general. His works also deliberately lack any symbolism, as is often the case with other still life painters of the time. On the contrary, Assteyn's flower and fruit pieces are to be understood as purely naturalistic works.

1. L. J. Bol, 'The Bosschaert dynasty', Londres, 1980, p. 39. Estimation 60 000 - 80 000 €

      Bartholomeus Assteyn,1607 Dordrecht - 1667

      Est: €40,000 - €60,000

Bartholomeus Assteyn, 1607 Dordrecht - 1667 STILLLEBEN MIT BLUMEN IN EINER CHINESISCHEN VASE Öl auf Holz. 88 x 62 cm. (1021097) Bartholomeus Assteyn, 1607 Dordrecht - 1667 STILL LIFE WITH FLOWERS IN A CHINESE VASE Oil on panel. 88 x 62 cm. Monogrammed and dated on the plinth “1645”. Accompanied by a certificate of authenticity with image of the painting by Sam Segal, who viewed the painting in Amsterdam in February 1990. The magnificent still life shows a large lush bouquet. The Dordrecht master has rendered the delicateness and the different surface structures and textures with great accuracy. The finely nuanced colouration gives the bouquet great three-dimensionality. Notes: A similar, however unsigned, still life is held at the Norton Simon Art Foundation (here attributed to Ambrosius Bosschaert).
