Ottomar Anschütz, considered a pioneer in the field of early camera technology, began making motion studies of animals he kept on a large property near his home in 1882. With the help of a small hand-held camera with a focal-plane shutter, which allowed exposure times of up to 1/1000 of a second, he managed to take extraordinarily lifelike pictures, which were especially popular with artists as models for their paintings. Ottomar Anschütz (1846-1907), 'Otto Lilienthal', Berlin, 1894

          Est: €480 - €600

Black and white photograph, mounted under mat Berlin, Germany, 1894; modern print Ottomar Anschütz (1846-1907) - German pioneer serial photography and cinematography Inscribed on verso 'Ottomar Anschütz / Otto Lilienthal' Image size: 18.2 x 24.2 cm Very good condition A historic moment in the history of aviation, captured by a pioneer of modern photography Ottomar Anschütz documented the flights of Otto Lilienthal in 1893 and 1894. The present black and white photograph was made on the Fliegerberg and shows Lilienthal gliding over Berlin in one of his constructions. The German aviation pioneer completed thousands of gliding flights with flight ranges of up to 80 meters from the top of the 15-meter-high hill. The photograph is inscribed in black pen on verso 'Ottomar Anschütz / Otto Lilienthal'. The print is in very good condition consistent with age; it is mounted under a mat. The sheet-sized image measures 18.2 x 24.2 cm, the mat measures 30 x 40 cm. Ottomar Anschütz (1846-1907) Between 1864 and 1868 Ottomar Anschütz was trained as a photographer by Ferdinand Beyrich, Franz Hanfstaengl and Ludwig Angerer. He then worked as a decorative painter and portrait photographer, quickly gaining renown for his portraits. In addition, Anschütz experimented with new ideas for snapshot photography, developing a hand-held camera with a focal-plane shutter, which he patented in 1882. His series of flying storks was among the first examples of instantaneous photography. In 1884 two of his photographs taken during the Imperial maneuvers in Breslau were published in the Leipzig 'Illustrirte Zeitung'. These are now considered the precursors of modern-day press photographs. In the following years, Anschütz created studies of moving people and animals, which he gathered into series and projected on an apparatus called 'Schnellseher' (Quick Viever) with which Anschütz laid the foundation for motion picture photography. Rightly Anschütz is now regarded as a pioneer of photography and cinematography, with his works having received greater attention in recent years.
