      Nov. 17, 2020

Sir William Allan (British 1782-1850) "Circassian Captives" Oil Board Painting

      Est: $15,000 - $20,000

Sir William Allan (British 1782-1850) "Circassian Captives" Oil on Board Painting. An exceptional quality painting in every way. The details are phenomenal, the scene is captivating. The Sale of Circassian Captives to a Turkish Bashaw depicts a Circassian tribal chief selling captives of a neighboring tribe taken in war, to a Turkish Sultan or Pasha (Bashaw). The exposed portion of the board measures 16 by 24 in (41 x 61 cm) and the period giltwood frame measures 23 by 30 inches. According to Christie's (from their description of lot 82, a painting by Allan with estimate of 30,000-50,000 GBP, in their sale in London on June 7, 2007), the original painting was exhibited to great acclaim in 1815 in Edinburgh. A reproduction on paper by the Scottish engraver, James Stewart, resides in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland, and we have seen another appear for sale online, but ours is the painted work after the original that we have seen in our almost 20 years in business. Allan was a distinguished Scottish historical painter. A member of the Royal Academy, he also served as President of the Royal Scottish Academy. He travelled widely, to France, Germany, Russian, Spain, Morocco and elsewhere, and is known for his painted genre scenes of historic moments and battles, and for his portraiture. Notably, in 1843 The Duke of Wellington is said to have purchased his painting entitled Battle of Waterloo from the English Side. In 1841 he became the limner (portraitist) to the queen in Scotland and was knighted in 1842. Allan's works periodically appear at major auction. A most notable sale occurred at Sotheby's in London on September 5, 2001, in their sale of Scottish and Sporting Pictures, where his portrait of Mary Queen of Scots was offered in lot 1,333 with an estimate of 50,000-80,000 GBP and sold for 108,000 GBP. Very nice condition Signed on the back.

The Stolen Child Recovered signed and dated 'Wm. Allan/1840' (lower right) oil on panel 251/2 x 39 in. (64.8 x 99 cm.) PROVENANCE Anon. sale, Christie's, Glasgow, 19 November 1992, lot 876, when acquired by the present owner. NOTES The picture has only acquired this title in recent years, and it may be incorrect. Certainly it is not the work of this title that Allan exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy in 1842; this is now in the Aberdeen Art Gallery and is a different composition. A picture with the same title that Allan showed at the Royal Academy, London, in 1841 may also be the one at Aberdeen. He exhibited at both venues for many years, and became president at the RSA in 1838. Allan was a friend of Wilkie from the time when they were fellow students at the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh, and this picture, painted a year before Wilkie's death, is very much in his tradition. Although he sports a kilt, the seated figure's head-dress and profile seem almost Circassian, reminding us that Allan went to Russia in 1805 and spent several years in the Ukraine and Turkey. These travels provided subjects for many of his future pictures.

Edinburgh, National Gallery of Scotland, Master Class: Robert Scott Lauder and his pupils, 1983, no. 28. NOTES Robert Scott Lauder, who was born in Scotland and was a pupil of Sir William Allan, R.A., P.R.S.A (1782-1850), began as a portrait painter but became increasingly interested in historical genre and subjects drawn from literature. He was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1829, which had been established three years previously, and moved to Rome with his wife, the daughter of his fellow artist, John Thomson, in 1833. He returned from Italy in 1838 and settled in London where he exhibited his work both at the British Institution and the Royal Academy. He moved back to Scotland in 1852 having been appointed Master of the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh and was an extremely popular and effective teacher guiding many of the Academy's best pupils, such as William Quiller Orchardson, R.A. (1832-1910) and John Pettie, R.A. (1839-1893) whose work was to define the Scottish School of painting. He himself was the most outstanding Scottish history painter of his generation. The novels of Sir Walter Scott inspired some of Lauder's best work. The present picture is taken from an incident in Scott's Quentin Durward (chapter 4), a tale of political skulduggery and chivalric deeds set in fifteenth-century France, which had an immense success not least in Europe, on its publication in 1823. Durward, a member of King Louis XI of France's bodyguard, both protects and courts Isabelle de Croye, a beautiful heiress. In this scene King Louis XI of France, disguised as Maitre Pierre, intimidates Isabella, Countess of Croye, and Scott's young hero Quentin Durward in his instinctive chivalric defence of her unwittingly offends the King, leading the King to concoct a stratagem which, if successful (which it is not in the end), is intended to embroil both Durward and the Countess of Croye, ruining her and leading to the hero Quentin Durward's death: 'The door opened, and a girl, rather above than under fifteen years old, entered with a platter, covered with damask, on which was placed a small saucer of the dried plums which have always added to the reputation of Tours, and a cup of the curiously chased plate which the goldsmiths of that city were anciently famed for executing... ''How now, Jacqueline!'' said Maitre Pierre, when she entered the apartment - ''Did I not desire that Dame Perette should bring what I wanted?''... Jacqueline turned pale, and even tottered at the answer of Maitre Pierre; for it must be owned, that his voice and looks, at all times harsh, caustic, and unpleasing, had, when he expressed anger or suspicion, an effect both sinister and alarming. The mountain chivalry of Quentin Durward was instantly awakened, and he hastened to approach Jacqueline, and relieve her of the burden she bore, and which she passively resigned to him, while, with a timid and anxious look, she watched the countenance of the angry burgess.' The subject had previously been illustrated by J. W. Wright in his illustration in the Magnum Opus edition of Scott's novels, which had been published by Robert Cadell in 1831 which Lauder seems to have turned to relatively frequently as a source. Lauder appears to have been influenced in his composition by Millais' Lorenzo and Isabella, the first pre-Raphaelite picture which Millais exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1849, which is of a parallel theme of a villain brooding over the murder of one of a pair of youthful lovers who, innocent of approaching disaster, are totally occupied with each other.
