    Est: $12,000 - $18,000

Enrique Alférez Mexican/Louisiana, 1901-1999 "The Source" cast stone with applied patina c. 1930, unsigned, study for The Shriever Fountain in the Botanical Garden, City Park, New Orleans. The talented and beloved Mexican-born Enrique Alferez had a colorful and varied career before settling in New Orleans in 1929. Alferez worked in Texas before making his way to Chicago to study art under the revered sculptor and educator Lorado Taft (1860-1936) at the prestigious Art Institute of Chicago. Taft had personally invited the young Alferez to Chicago after seeing his work during a lecture tour of the South. Admired for his elegant, stylized figural sculptures, Alferez's work is found throughout his adoptive New Orleans, most especially in the Botanical Garden of City Park. Alferez, then involved with the Works Progress Administration as its New Orleans director along with the architect Richard Koch and the landscape artist William Wierdorn, was instrumental in the designing, planning and eventual construction of City Park, which soon became one of the artistic highlights of the city. The work offered here is an early model for one of the first sculptures commissioned for the Garden - the female figure at the center of the Shriever Fountain dating to 1932. An ode to the human figure, Alferez's sculptures simultaneously convey a sense of dignity while suggesting an undercurrent of intense emotion. There is a vitality and urgency to his work that reflects the soul of New Orleans.

    Enrique Alférez, Mexican/Louisiana 1901-1999, “Kneeling Figure”, cast composite stone with bronze patina, 47 x 24 x 27 in. (119.4 x 61 x 68.6 cm.), Overall: 50 x 24 x 37 in. (127 x 61 x 94 cm.)

    Est: $20,000 - $30,000

† Enrique Alférez Mexican/Louisiana, 1901-1999 "Kneeling Figure" cast composite stone with bronze patina unsigned, composite stone base. Born in Mexico in 1901, Enrique Alferez's life spanned almost the entirety of the 20th century. Alferez settled in New Orleans in 1929, an eclectic locale with a thriving art scene, and he split his time between there and his family compound and studio in Morelia, Mexico. His numerous public works have had a lasting impact on the visual identity of New Orleans. The sculpture offered here is a life-size form of a kneeling woman with upraised arms wringing out her hair. An inscription on a known preparatory sketch (not offered) indicates that the work was created in Morelia in July of 1971. The pose bears resemblance to the allegorical kneeling figure of the South wind in one of Alferez's defining works, the Fountain of the Four Winds, installed near the entrance to the New Orleans Lakefront Airport in 1938, thirty-three years prior. As is typical for Alferez, he utilized industrial materials such as cast concrete and stone aggregate and created his own techniques/patina to imitate a bronze finish. While that patina has aged over time, consistent with an outdoor placement, the surface does not lessen the impact of the gracefulness of the elegant figure. Alferez' large-scale works are offered very rarely at auction. Cherished in the same family collection since its commission, this figure displays the artist's true mastery of the human form, defining him as a modernist who combined realism with classical influences and techniques to imbue an intense depth of meaning into his work.

With particular awareness of the importance of breaking the cycles of homelessness for parents and their children, and how critical a stable home is for a child to thrive and lead a healthy, flourishing life, they supported a wide variety of social action programs through giving of themselves and philanthropic initiatives. They enjoyed speaking about the importance of giving and loved leveraging their philanthropy – as the family is doing today – to inspire others to give in support of children and families in need.

Note: The striking bust on offer here is a full-size cast concrete study for the larger-than-life-size sculpture entitled “Miami Indian,” which was unveiled by Enrique Alferez in 1951 and is currently exhibited in The Helis Foundation Enrique Alferez Sculpture Garden in City Park. Formerly on display alongside its counterpart, the bust is a detailed study for the face and head of the subject, whose features and expression are rendered with the power and sensitivity Alferez so masterfully conveyed throughout the arc of his oeuvre. Alferez, who had a reputation for being outspoken, never shied away from controversial issues, and steadfastly believed in justice. As Katie Bowler Young states in her monograph on the artist: “he rebelled against racist social constructs and created artwork that reflected the public more broadly.” Ref.: Young, Katie Bowler. Enrique Alferez (Mexican/New Orleans, 1901-1999) , "Vietnam", 1990, bronze, h. 47 in., wood base. Note: Born in Mexico in 1901, Enrique Alferez’s life spanned almost the entirety of the 20th century. Alferez settled in New Orleans in 1929, an eclectic city with a thriving art scene. In 1952, he met his wife ,Peggy Selway, at Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop. Doug MacCash described their first meeting as such: “Her porcelain skin, ice-blue eyes and straight blond hair shone against her black velvet dress, attracting the attention of the dark, handsome man carving the ham—with a machete.” The machete-wielding mystery man was Alferez, who was immediately smitten by this registered nurse from Harrisburg, PA. It took a year of wooing before she would agree to be his wife. The two would split their time between Mexico and New Orleans. Peggy proved to be the perfect counterbalance to the fiery artist. In Peggy he found an intellectual equal described as the artist’s “other self.” She was a passionate person: “… a rapacious reader, consuming countless books and periodicals, feeding her insatiable need for knowledge of current events.” She was also a vehement protestor of the Vietnam War, a feeling shared by her husband. Noted as a superlative example of Alferez's large-scale work, "Vietnam" on offer here is his own poignant take on one of he and Peggy’s more fervent causes. This remarkable large-scale installation bronze, which has been on display in the Helis Foundation Sculpture Garden since 2015, is the largest sculpture by Alferez offered at auction to date. Different than many of Alferez's figures, which are often serenely still, this work illustrates the artist's remarkable ability to insinuate movement and action through the rigid medium of bronze. The woman, a mother, is caught mid-stride carrying her baby to safety from unseen foes as she flees. The kinetic frenzy of the wind and war-ravaged backdrop is implied through the expression on her face, the baby’s legs akimbo in her embrace, and the flowing rendering of her hair and clothing. In focusing on the mother and child, the horrors and destruction of war are implied, albeit rather poetically, through Alferez’s elegant style. The resulting effect is a sensitive and moving masterpiece, replete with beauty and meaning. Ref.: MacCash, Doug. “Peggy Alferez”. The Times Picayune. Aug. 22, 2006. www.obits.nola.com. Enrique Alferez (American/New Orleans, 1901-1999), "Kneeling Nude", terracotta, unsigned, h. 27 in., wood base, overall h. 29 1/4 in. Note: Enrique Alferez’ classic and iconic Art Deco style punctuates the scenery of New Orleans with his sculptures in parks and public spaces throughout the city he called home for over six decades. While elegant, stylized works such as "Repose" and "Gymnast", located in the Enrique Alferez Sculpture Garden in City Park, epitomize Alferez’ technique in bronze, sculptures such as "Kneeling Nude" offered here display the artist’s skill with the textural, expressionistic shaping of terracotta. Alferez' mastery in combining modern design components with Pre-Columbian elements and an emphasis on his Mexican roots is clearly seen in "Kneeling Nude." The earth tones, as well as the texture of the woman’s skin call to mind traditional Mexican terracotta sculptures while the sensuous lines and curves of the woman’s pose exhibit the artist's talent in depicting the female form.

Enrique Alferez (Mexican/Louisiana, 1901-1999) "Gaucho" patinated bronze on a carved wood base. overall h. 15", w. 6-1/4", d. 4-1/8" Provenance: Purchased from the artist; Private collection, New Orleans, Louisiana. Notes: A native of Mexico who was to become one of New Orleans' most iconic artists, Alferez received his earliest training in the studio of his father, a European-trained sculptor of religious figures. At the tender age of 12, he was kidnapped by forces loyal to Francisco "Pancho" Villa and spent the next seven years serving under the General during the devastating Mexican Revolution; he managed to escape in 1920 and fled to Texas. He eventually enrolled in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, studying under Lorado Taft and training in the then waning Beaux-Art style. It wasn't until the emergence of Art Deco that Alferez truly found his distinctive style of angular planes which adeptly reduce the human form to its most essential elements. His works, whether sculpture or drawing, are redolent of the influences of his Mexican childhood, an inspired combination of Pre-Columbian relics, Catholic symbolism, and the remnants of Colonialism. The work presented here, of the South American cow-herder, is a wonderful example of the sculptor at his most accomplished - employing the fewest lines possible, Alferez easily conveys the pride and dignity of his subject.

Note: Enrique Alferez created hundreds of pieces throughout his career, designing works of art in both two and three-dimensional media. Photos of his studio show sculptures in progress as well as large scale drawings in charcoal and chalk, sometimes standalone pieces and sometimes sketches for a sculpture. His characteristic stylized figures and chiaroscuro shading technique are both exhibited in the drawing of a fisherman casting his net offered here. The cross-hatching of the net, combined with the chalk highlights, create an elegant pattern similar to those seen in Art Deco architecture and sculpture of the 1930s.

    Est: $10,000 - $15,000

Enrique Alferez (American/New Orleans, 1901-1999), "Woman in a Huipil", 1987, bronze, signature, date and "N.O." inscribed on self-base, h. 16 in., w. 7 in., d. 5 1/2 in., wood base, overall h. 17 in. Note: Noted New Orleans sculptor Enrique Alferez repeatedly revisited the theme of "Woman in a Huipil" throughout his career. He executed various models of this bronze in different sizes and finishes for several decades beginning in the 1960s. Often the pose will differ slightly, by a turn of the head, or an adjustment in the triangulation of the arm. The woman is always depicted with her hair in a neat bun, her eyes tightly closed, in a state of serene calm and elegance. The work offered is a fine example of a sculpture from this series.

Enrique Alferez (Mexican-American/New Orleans, 1901-1999), "Repose", patinated bronze, brown and verdigris patina, h. 30 in., w. 24 in., d. 27 in. Provenance: Private Collection, New York. NOTE: This elegant and sensitive sculpture by Enrique Alferez is stunning for it’s grace and beauty. Aptly titled Repose, the serene nude sits with her legs bent in a seemingly meditative state. Another version of this sculpture is installed at the Helis Foundation Enrique Alferez Sculpture Garden at the New Orleans Botanical Garden. As exemplified by this bronze, Alferez was a master of rendering the female physique.

Enrique Alferez (Mexican/New Orleans, 1901-1999), "Governor of Louisiana: Richard W. Leche, 1936-1940", bronze medallion, signed lower right, dia. 31 1/2 in. Note: Richard W. Leche was governor of Louisiana from 1936-1939. Forced to resign in 1939 amidst speculation of misused and stolen funds, he was notoriously convicted in 1940, making him the first Louisiana governor sentenced to prison. Eventually Leche was pardoned by President Harry Truman in 1953. In 1938, Enrique Alferez was commissioned by the administration of Governor Leche to create 143 bronze medallions bearing his likeness to be mounted on state-constructed buildings. Sixteen medallions were placed on buildings around LSU's campus, notably the campus' recently constructed law school building, Leche Hall. Both the medallion and the "Leche Hall" inscription were removed from the building following the governor's resignation. Today, the sole medallion remaining on public view can be found on the east side north end of Strawberry Stadium at Southeastern Louisiana University. While the fate of the remaining medallions is unclear, a Times Picayune article from 1939 reports that "capital sources say the bronze has been melted down into ashtrays and other useful gadgets." The surviving example offered here provides a rare glimpse into this tumultuous period of Louisiana history.
