Ulisse Aldrovandi (1522-1605) is regarded as the father of modern natural history due to his pivotal contribution to zoology, botany and geology. An erudite scholar of wide-ranging interests, he was the first professor of natural science at Bologna University. There, he established a renowned botanical garden and gathered a steady amount of specimens and detailed drawings of faunal and floral rarities in his private museum. Everything was later bequeathed to the City Senate. The majority of his extensive essays were published posthumously by his pupils with the support of the Bolognese Commune.

        Aldrovandi - Parrot. 680

        Est: $150 - $300

This particular print is from Ulisse Aldrovandi's Ornithologia. The work was published in 1681 by Ex Camerali Typ in Bologna and Manolessiana. It was part of a work featuring original engravings from German, French, Dutch, English, Italian, and Swiss Zoological works from 1491-1966. This is an original plate in a publisher's printed wrapper that was originally begun by C. Nissen in 1968 published in Muenchen. It was to be titled C. Tierbücher aus fünf Jahrhunderten and only 100 copies were to be completed. It dealt with the history of zoological illustration through the centuries. It is the only work on early zoological publications which shows the original leaves together with an excellent bibliography. The superb leaves are for example taken from works such as: Ortus Sanitatis, Mainz 1491; Gart der Gesundheit, Strassburg, 1497-99; Gessner, Fischbuch, Frankfurt 1589; Schreber, Die Säugthiere, Halle 1775-1555; Bloch, Fische Deutschlands; Engramelle, Papillons d'Europe; Susemihl, Die Vögel Europas; etc.Bologna, Ex Camerali Typ.
