  • Neal Adams, The Art of Neal Adams Book and a Pair of Drawings
    Mar. 23, 2016

Neal Adams, The Art of Neal Adams Book and a Pair of Drawings

    Est: $2,800 - $3,640

First edition book accompanied by two drawings on paper USA, 2010 Neil Adams (b. 1941)—American comic book and commercial artist Signed by Neil Adams With certificate of authenticity from AFA Gallery Dimensions of Each Drawing: 12 ½ x 17 in. (31.8 x 43.2 cm.) Very good condition Estimate: $6,000 Signed first edition of Adams’ seminal catalogue raisonné featuring extensive annotation by the artist and comprehensive illustrations of his work. Accompanied by two original Adams drawings for covers discovered in the book when acquired. First time offered. Neil Adams (American, b. 1941) Originally rejected in 1959 by DC Comics, the adolescent Adams went to work penciling and doing background work on the popular Archie comics; he subsequently moved on to varied aspects of the industry as a storyboard, advertising, and comic-strip artist. After an extended 3-year stint rendering the popular Ben Casey strip, he joined Warren publishers and contributed to their Creepy and Eerie magazines. It was there, in work that ventured into more complex and demanding content with a darker tone, that he developed his distinctive style. With his maturation as an artist, he approached DC Comics for a second time and was hired as a freelancer. Shortly, after work on Strange Adventures, Adams’ innovative style was recognized and acclaimed by the comics industry. It was at DC as their top cover artist that Adams reimagined Batman and rescued him from the camp interpretation of the 60’s television show, introducing a darker and more complex visage that redefined the character – and the entire genre – through today. Seeking a more free-wheeling creative environment, Adams joined the revolutionary Marvel creative team and was embraced by Stan Lee as a core contributor to their growing stable of artists. It was a perfect match; rebels of comic art with well-honed skills (Adams and Jim Steranko) teamed in a historic creative synergy resulting in new life for the foundering X-Men series. As part of this seminal team of artists that broke onto the ascendant genre, Adams is credited in part to contributing to changing the face of Marvel. Recognized as a core figure in the evolution of the industry, Adams’ definitive advance of comic art to a higher level of expressive range and rich complexity makes him a pivotal figure in the history of the genre. Condition The book is in very good condition with minor slip-case shelf ware. The pen and ink drawings are in mint condition and have never been out of their protective sheathing. Shipping costs excl. statutory VAT and plus 2,5% (+VAT) shipping insurance.

Neal Adams and Dick Giordano Power Records #PR30 Robin

    Est: -

Neal Adams and Dick Giordano Power Records #PR30 Robin Meets Man-Bat Page 16 Original Art (Power Records, 1976). This is from the last Batman story drawn by Neal Adams (until 2010 that is)! After Batman #255 (March 1974) Adams' only Bat-tales were two Power Records comics produced by his Continuity Studios. This is also one of the few Power Records superhero issues to have an original story, and therefore one of the few for which original art exists! This page even features a second Man-Bat, and as you may have guessed it's Kirk Langstrom's wife Francine. Image area of approximately 10" x 15", matted to foamcore for an overall size of 14.25" x 20.5". There is a pasted-on reverse type stat, done at the time of publication; otherwise, the art is in Excellent condition.

Pages 2, 3, and 4 from the initial Star Trek installment from the very popular Power Records book and record sets, as drawn by Russ Heath, Dick Giordano, and Neal Adams. This story was notable for two odd cast changes -- Uhuru was depicted as a blonde Caucasian, and Sulu as an African American! It's all handled with the usual artistic brilliance of Adams' Continuity Studios. The ink and red marker on bristol art pages each have image areas of approximately 10" x 15"; there is one missing word balloon caption on page 2, but otherwise the pages are in Very Good condition.
