Benno Adam (after) - Marché au bétail dans la Haute Bavière (A market of livestock in the Bavarian alps), c. 1839-1842 Rare lithograph on chine collé stamped by the publisher. Print made by Johann Wölfle. Published by Piloty & Loehle, Munich, c. 1839-1842. Some folds, creasers, spots and wear signs on the support paper, the image is in very good condition (see all the photos for the details). Appr. paper dimensions 61 x 88 cm Lithographic printers active from 1839 till 1866, partnership of Ferdinand Piloty I and Loehle were the official publishers of the 'Königlich Bayerische Pinakothek' (Royal Bavarian Pinakothek). Their lithographs were produced in chine collé technique which allowed the printmaker to print on a much more delicate surface, such as Japanese paper bonded onto a heavier support, that pulls finer details off the plate. Nowadays these lithographs are in collections of renowned museums, such as The British Museum or Philadelphia Museum of Art. Rare lithographie sur chine collé estampillée par l'éditeur. Estampe réalisée par Johann Wölfle. Publiée par Piloty & Loehle, Munich, c. 1839-1842. Emil Adam (1843 München - 1924 ebenda) Porträt eines Barsoi Höchst lebendig geschildertes, feinmalerisch ausgeführtes Tierbildnis mit meisterhafter Darstellung der Fellzeichnung. Adam, Spross der bedeutenden Münchener Künstlerdynastie, zeigte als Tiermaler früh ein künstlerisches Talent für Pferdeporträts. Seit 1860 erhielt er zahlreiche Aufträge aus dem Hochadel, die ihm europaweit einen Ruf als bester Maler von Rasse- und Rennpferden einbrachten. 1878 malte er u. a. die Stute "Kincsem", das erfolgreichste Rennpferd aller Zeiten, welches im selben Jahr den Großen Preis von Baden-Baden gewann. Bei seinem für 1878 dokumentierten Aufenthalt in Baden-Baden entstand auch dieses Bildnis eines Barsoi - dem Lieblingshund des russischen Adels zur Zarenzeit, welche die Stadt im 19. Jh. als beliebte Sommerresidenz erkoren hatte. Öl/Mahagonitafel. R. u. sowie l. u. zweifach sign. u. dat. 1878 mit Ortsangabe Baden-Baden. 37 cm x 45 cm. Rahmen. Oil on mahogany panel. Signed and dated 1878 twice with location Baden-Baden.

The Poetical Works of John Milton, edited by Sir Egerton Brydges, Bart. New Edition, 1842. Very fine "hidden" split fore edge paintings which depict two of Michelangelo's most famous works: The Fall and Expulsion from the Garden of Eden and The Creation of Adam. A very rare example beautifully executed. There is an interesting legend of how hidden fore-edge painting on books supposedly first began: Charles II of England had a lady friend, a duchess, who often borrowed his books, sometimes forgetting to return them. As the story goes, the king commissioned the court painter, Sir Peter Lely, and the court bookbinder, Samuel Mearne, to devise a secret method to identify his books. They worked out a unique plan to paint a hidden image in the edges. Some weeks later, when the king visited the duchess, he spotted a familiar-looking book on a shelf. Taking it down, he said, "I'll just take my book along with me." "But sire," the lady protested, "that book is mine." "Oh?" The king raised his brows. Then, with a sly smile, he fanned out the book and revealed what had been painted on the inner edges--the royal coat of arms.
