Description

The Poetical Works of John Milton, edited by Sir Egerton Brydges, Bart. New Edition, 1842.

Very fine "hidden" split fore edge paintings which depict two of Michelangelo's most famous works: The Fall and Expulsion from the Garden of Eden and The Creation of Adam. A very rare example beautifully executed.

There is an interesting legend of how hidden fore-edge painting on books supposedly first began:

Charles II of England had a lady friend, a duchess, who often borrowed his books, sometimes forgetting to return them. As the story goes, the king commissioned the court painter, Sir Peter Lely, and the court bookbinder, Samuel Mearne, to devise a secret method to identify his books. They worked out a unique plan to paint a hidden image in the edges.

Some weeks later, when the king visited the duchess, he spotted a familiar-looking book on a shelf. Taking it down, he said, "I'll just take my book along with me." "But sire," the lady protested, "that book is mine." "Oh?" The king raised his brows. Then, with a sly smile, he fanned out the book and revealed what had been painted on the inner edges--the royal coat of arms.

INSURANCE
All packages receive an automatic $50 of insurance coverage from the United States Postal Service. If you would like to purchase additional insurance coverage for your items, please contact us at info@regencyantiquebooks.com and we will adjust your invoice accordingly.

U.S. SHIPPING
Packages shipped within the United States will require signature verification.

INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING (Outside USA)
All international packages MUST be fully insured at the buyer's expense. Packages shipped internationally will have full value declared on the shipping form. International buyers will be responsible for any customs fees incurred.

Taxes

All sales to buyers in the state of Arizona are subject to a 8.6% sales tax fee which will be included in the invoice.

Buyer's Premium

In addition to the hammer price, the buyer agrees to pay Regency Antique Books a buyer's premium of 18%, and the applicable sales tax added to the final total. An additional buyer's premium of 5% is applied to all online bids.
