Negroamaro

Negroamaro is a red-wine grape grown throughout southern Italy, especially in Puglia. In Italian the grape name means “black bitter,” and the flavor profile tends to be rich in prunes, black plums and dried herbs. Negroamaro is often blended with Primitivo (Zinfandel’s Italian cousin), which results in a delightful wine featuring smoke, herbs, refined tannins, and sweet red fruit. Other Italian wines featuring Negroamaro are Sangiovese, Montepulciano, Malvasia Nera, and Salice Salentino.

It’s thought that this grape was introduced to Italy as early as 7th Century B.C. by travelers from the former Illyria, in what is now the Western Balkans. No matter the blend, using Negroamaro typically results in smooth, light tannins. It thrives in Puglia, where the local wine-grape crops producer higher than normal natural acidity because the Ionian Sea cools the air overnight.
