Musical Instruments - General

The oldest musical instruments were most likely used during religious ceremonies and include flutes, drums, trumpets, and harps. These ancient instruments were made of wood, bone, animal skins, and animal horns. As music evolved from strictly ritual use to a form of entertainment, many other instruments appeared. Instruments can be classified into the following categories: wind, string, percussion, and keyboards. Some instruments fit into more than one category.

People who play or simply love music often find the collection of musical instruments interesting. For collecting purposes, instruments can be further classified into eras and types. Collectors may search for primitive instruments from ancient tribes, classical instruments from the 1700s, or folk instruments from the Civil War era. Instruments may also be classified according to the style of music they were used for, such as classical, folk music, jazz, and rock and roll. Many collectible instruments are available at musical instrument auctions.

Musical instruments should always be carefully inspected prior to purchase. Collectors should make sure the instruments are in good working condition, have acceptable sound, and a good appearance. Instruments should be inspected in person if possible to check for damage or repairs. If buying online, the instrument should be advertised with lots of pictures and honest disclosure of any defects or repairs.
