Golf Autographs

With roots reaching back to the 13th century, the game of golf is now one of the world's most substantial sports. With its fan network in constant growth, golf and its elite players are greeted by adoring enthusiasts seeking autographs after every match.

First mentioned in Dutch documents dating to 1297, golf as it is known today was fully developed by the Scottish in the 15th century. Though the sport's evolution in Scotland was a rocky one as Scottish King James IV outlawed the game for a brief period, its popularity increased on a steady ascent. It was the 19th century when golf's international popularity exploded: by the 1880s, golfing clubs dotted the globe.

Today, the history of golf is wrapped up in a complementary celebration of its modern talents. From early 20th-century standout Bobby Jones to Tiger Woods, golf's masters inspire and encourage future generations. Their autographs only add to this lore.

Quick Facts

  • The name "golf" is most likely derived from the Dutch word "kolf," which means club
  • The longest recorded golf ball drive is credited to professional golfer Michael Hoke Austin, whose golf ball stretched 515 yards in one stroke in 1974
  • The majority of golf balls were crafted from wood between the 14th to 16th centuries. However, some balls known as featheries were made from feathers packed into leather pouches
