Description

Zimmermann's Captain Cook: An Account of the Third Voyage of Captain Cook Around the World, 1776-1780, by Henry Zimmermann, of Wissloch, in the Palatine, and Translated from the Mannheim edition of 1781 by Elsa Michaelis and Cecil French

xiv, [4], 120 pp. Edited with an Introduction and Notes by His Honour F.W. Howay. Preface by Lorne Pierce (who is the general editor of The Canadian Historical Studies series). Illustrated with facsimiles; a folding map in the back; frontispiece from a painting. 9 1/2 x6 1/4, blue cloth with gilt cover vignette, spine lettered in gilt, jacket. No. 35 of 250 copies.

One of two unauthorized works on the third voyage of Captain Cook to appear in 1781, the other being the anonymous journal of John Rickman. This is the definitive English translation, with a scholarly and excellent introduction by Howay, which has stood for a long time as the best account of Zimmermann and the circumstances surrounding the original edition.
