Notes

Literature is not completely tabooed in Zhu Wei's paintings; in fact, literary elements can be found in works where he exhibits extreme romanticism. They reflect no longer reality, but a sense of compassionate ridicule and hapless absurdity beneath surface appearances. The structure and detail of Zhu Wei's works are often intimately and intricately associated with Chinese classical literature. His understanding of classical literature, combined with his unique interpretations and observations, lead to distinctive experiences and reactions to which only an accomplished artist could relate.
