Item Overview

Description

Yuval Kanev (b. 1945), Figure, Oil on Canvas, flaws: apparently from water damages to the lower part, and color peelings in different areas, signed, measurements: 106X78 cm.X Yuval Kanev - born in 1945. Yuval Kanev studied painting in the Avni Institute in Tel Aviv, in a time of strong affiliation to the Paris Avant-garde and especially to Lyrical Abstraction. Despite his strong connections to his teachers, which supported his remarkable talent, he stopped attending the institute and held long tours in European museums where he absorbed strong hetrogenic influences. After returning to Tel Aviv he made a living doing different jobs, made his firt exhibition in 1979, searched his path in the four corners of his studio, and grew distant from mainstream ideologies and leading rhetorics in the art world. His mature work uncover a deep personal sentiment to the simplest principles of painting as well as the most tangible such as the line and the stain. This intimacy is occasionally apparent in a brushstroke, crude atmosphere, massive surfaces or compositions dominated by a wide range of expression and intuition. The subjet of visual composition interests him among other places in his uniuque book 'Templates and Pictures' 1986. Moreover, he is without a doubt infuenced by the basic templates of different art fields such as music, poetry and prose - for examle a in the E Major scale, Iambic Pentameter, or the simple sentence syntax in the Hebrew language - which in fact don't have suitable counterparts in the field of painting. In a bit of a paradoxical way, Kanev acknowledges in retrospect the painters inferior situation, having to create in an anonymous theoretical environment, meaning in crude and primitive conditions, since he lacks basic conceptual tools in comparison to the musical author, the poet and the novelist. Most of his time is spent inside the studio without words, preparing a canvas, mixing paint, cleaning a brush, moving a picture from one corner to another, or painting...
