Lot 33: YU ZHIDING (1647-1716), attrib. Hang scrolling, mounted, framed and glazed, 109 x 38cm. Provenance: John Sparks, 9th December 1968. John Marriott (1921-2007) and Count R. L. Sangorski (1940-2014) Collection. ???(1647-1716) ????? ??????? ??????? ?????? ????????? Yu Zhiding (1647-1716) was a Yangzhou-based painter and worked for a time at the Imperial Painting Academy. Specialising in portraits, his works are also represented in the Palace Museum collection in Beijing. The present painting depicts a scene from the story of Bole, who under the direction of Emperor Chu of the Spring and Autumn period, located a lowly pack-horse for the Emperor’s use, which despite the Emperor’s initial reservations, was ultimately acknowledged to be an outstanding find from an unlikely source.
