The nine-storey Whampoa Pagoda was built by Emperor Wanli around 1600 and was one of the 'eight beautiful scenes' of Canton. It became a navigational landmark for shipping approaching the busy anchorage at Whampoa. Dahuangjiao Fort was situated in the Macao Passage and guarded the mouth of the Pearl River, protecting Canton.
