Rukhin" in cyrillics and dated 75 in ink mid right19.75 x 19.75 in — 50.2 x 50.2 cmProvenance:Private Collection, Port Perry, OntarioNote:A nonconformist artist in Leningrad, Rukhin created work that challenged Socialist Realism. In 1974 his controversial exhibition “Bulldozer” with fellow artist Oscar Rabine was closed by the police. Two years later, Rukhin died in his sleep in a fire believed to have been set by the KGB.Commencing in 1968, Rukhin overlaid elements of Russian antiquity such as icons and other objects into thickly coated surfaces as exemplified by this lot.Estimate: $3,000—5,000
