Description

YEHOUDA CHAKI (1938-)DIARY 9816oil on canvassigned; signed and titled on the reverse, dated 1998 on gallery label on stretcher 40 ins x 65 ins; 101.6 cms x 165.1 cms Provenance:Private Collection, TorontoOdon Wagner Gallery, TorontoLiterature:Rosshandler, Leo, “Introduction,” in Chaki: A Language of Passion, 1994Yehouda Chaki’s landscapes and still lifes combine typical elements of the natural world - trees, hills, and rivers - with the artist’s memories and imagined conceptions of the world. The resulting works evoke familiarity, yet none of the them are based on a specific place. Chaki manifests his artistic prowess in the ability to construct a “believable reality.” As curator Leo Rosshandler explains, “The essence of the paintings is to be found in their execution. Shapes are defined by forceful lines or clashes of color, distance is conveyed by subtle shadings contrasting brutal overlaps, and light and mood proceed from chromatic interplays laces with telling brushwork.”Chaki was born in Athens in 1938 and emigrated to Montreal in 1962. He attended the Avni Academy of Art and Design in Tel Aviv and Ecole des Beux Arts in Paris. Chaki’s work can be found in private collections around the world including the Royal Bank of Canada, Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Philadelphia Museum, and Jerusalem City Hall.Estimate: $7,000–9,000
