Notes

"Continuing his creation in the medium of silk, Ye Yongqing also made a series of painted installations. One piece, Ice Bed -the Concreteness of Time and Temperature used the melting of ice and color and the immersion process of materials such as silk and rice to turn time into a richly changing visual subject, as the passage of time and change of temperature are the truest experiences of life, and the most concrete examination of the spirit, Nine Bird Cages in Winter, which recently displayed at the First Shanghai Biennial, was even stronger demonstration of Ye's adept usage of painting, materials and installation methods. Ye brought everyday objects together in a unique way, profoundly and seamlessly. His narrative is tranquil, but a careful reading to much introspection. Ye surpasses others in his ability to bring so many images, icons, expressions and writings together into the complete construct that visual art so needs, and through a three-dimensional conceptual method, deep experience of history and internalized critical spirit, bring the complex Chinese experience into the realm of art." -Wang Lin, Foreword to Ye Yongqing's work, 1996
