Early 20th century
A pair of six-fold screens, in ink and colour on gold-leaf paper ground: the right-hand screen depicting a white horse with its back to the viewer, its head turned to the left, standing behind ajisai (hydrangea) shrub with a lumber fence; the left-hand screen with three puppies, two tumbling over each other while the other lies asleep on its belly, beside rose growing from behind a log fence, both signed Shunkyo with two seals Ittetsu koji and [...]. Each screen 170.5cm x 373cm (67 1/8in x 146 7/8in). (2).

Born in Shiga Prefecture, he lived in Kyoto; at the age of twelve, Shunkyo became a pupil of the Japanese-style painter Nomura Bunkyo (1854-1911) then Mori Kansai (1814-1894). His style at first is that of the Shijo School; later he became more eclectic, painting landscapes with considerable traces of Western influence.
