Notes

The beautiful nonentity in illusion is all but the fairytalelike
spiritual state created by Xiong Yu , which is typical of this
generation. Xiong''s paintings are expressionistic in theme,
most of which purposely create an optical space of Heroinlike
feelings. In the youth painting of the early in the 1970''s
you can still find a realistic pain that has become an allegory.
But in the generation of Xiong Yu, people who were
born in the mid 70''s seem to completely depart from the
reality for the imaginary world of electronic cartoon. They
enjoy retreating into their own, remote from the larger
community of ordinary people. They grow up in consumption
culture. They regard the beautiful illusionary surrealistic
world as their spiritual hideout from the outside world.
Like everybody else, they look forward to goodness, innocence,
absolute happiness, but the sources of all these
seem to come from a culture integrating electronics, cartoon,
fashion and commercialism. Any cultural integration
would give rise to its own unique world and aesthetic perspective,
and would give birth to its own typical image,
along with the tragic sense of quasi-religion. Xiong Yu and
his generation have their own world of quasi-religion, that
is, the beautiful nonentity in illusion.
