Notes

Although working with the style of photo-realism in his early years, Xia Yang changed his style dramatically after he went to Paris in 1963. Starting from this period of time, the style of "Maomao ren" became the main characteristics of his art. The two works from this auction are representative of this style. Influenced by Primitivism, he reduced the background of the works into flat, bright colors. The dancing figure in The Divine of Marshal was done in using the techniques of Chinese cursive calligraphy with exaggerative colour. The movement of the figure contrasts with the simplicity of the background, implying a contradiction between virility of the life of each human being and the limitation imposed by the surrounding environment.
