Workshop of Johann Peter Wagner (1730 - 1809)A pair of angels in flight, 18th Cent., depicted in animated pose facing each other, the heads inclined to one side, with very curly locks, the arms extended, each with a gilt loincloth draping the hips, with handsomely carved wings, limewood, carved in the round, monochromed and gilt, Height: 56 cm, the original paint insignificantly flaked, a masterly Baroque angel from the workshop of the court sculptor Johann Peter Wagner circa 1760 - 70, (Er)Johann Peter Alexander Wagner, (baptised Obertheres (Lower Franconia), 26.02.1730, † 07.01.1809), sculptor, after studies at Vienna, Salzburg, Munich, and Mannheim, he settled in Würzburg in 1756, from where his workshop supplied the entire Lower Franconian region with religious and secular sculptures. While his early works are still in keeping with the spirit of the Rococo, his later pieces in the manner of antiquity are in the neoclassical mold. Works: "Vierröhrenbrunnen" in Würzburg (1763 - 1765; with L. van der Auvera); Stations of the Käppele, ibid. (1767); staircase figures and putti of the court gardens of the Würzburg Residency and in Veitshöchheim.
