Notes

As Maximilian I's court painter Bernhard Strigel produced a number of portraits of the Emperor, both formal and informal. The present type is derived from his most formal image of Maximilian with his Imperial trappings, three quarter length, in golden armour, with the order of the Golden Fleece and holding both sceptre and sword. A number of versions of this composition are known but the prime version is in the Musée des Beaux Arts, Strasbourg (see G. Otto, Bernhard Strigel, Munich 1964, p. 101, no. 55, pl. 124).
