Notes

As one of the premier advertising photographers of the pre-war era, Shibuya incorporated the avant-garde ideas of the Bauhaus within his commercial photographic work. In 1936 he won first prize for his photograph Laito Cream in the Asahi Advertising Contest. He was widely exhibited throughout the 1930s and 1940s and in 1952 formed the Japan Commercial Photographers Association alongside his contemporaries Ibuka Akira and Higuchi Tadao. Shibuya’s work is included in the collections of the Yokohama Museum of Art and the Kawasaki City Museum. Like many photographers, the majority of Shibuya’s prints were destroyed during the bombing of Tokyo. The prints offered in lots 174 and 175 are from Shibuya’s personal collection and all represent his advertising work from the 1930-1940s, they are believed to be unique.
