Notes

In 2004 the Louvre invited seven artists, including Susan Hefuna, to create a new work inspired by a piece of the permanent collection of the museum. Hefuna chose as her model a mashrabiya (wooden lattice) in the Louvre's Islamic collection, an architectural fragment originally from Cairo. Hefuna removed this from the wall and put the new piece she made in exactly the same place.

Previously Hefuna had worked on the theme of the mashrabiyas in drawing and true photography, but this was the first time she had made a mashrabiya piece in wood and, also a first, she began to weave words into the mashrabiya screen.
On the opposite side of the exhibition space she exhibited a digital photograph of the same size also of a mashrabiya .

To create these screens, Hefuna works closely with craftsmen in Cairo, who these days only make furniture rather than architectural ensembles. She provides them with 1:1 sketches showing the exact patterns and sizes of the finished piece.
