Description

William (Wilhelm) Riess (German, 1856-1919), "Through", Woodrow Wilson at the wheel of "The Ship of State", abandoning isolationism to engage the Central Powers in WWI, the clenched jaw leader facing into the gale defines this patriotic/propagandistic painting; oil on canvas in hand carved Americana frame with nautical motifs; 47 1/2" x 38 1/2"; signed and dated 1918 lower center and lower right. Also along with a print from the original painting; 13 1/2" x 10 5/8"; signed in the print, copyright 1918. Reproduced by American Intaglio Printing Press Co., Chicago, IL. Provenance: Previously in the private collection of the Riess family. Riess studied at the Berlin Art Academy. He immigrated to the States in 1884 and settled in Indianapolis, IN.
