Description

Early 20th c. Willibald Besta (1886-1949) Oil on Canvas, 19th c Castle Path Scene. Signed by the artist lower right and notated Munchen (Munich), where this oil was painted. Measures 23"x26, is unframed. Weight 2 pds. Willibald Besta studied painting at the Royal Arts and Crafts School in Wroclaw with Eduard Kaempffer and Carl Ernst Morgenstern, graduated in 1906, traveled to Paris and studied at the Académie Julian . He then enrolled on May 13, 1908 at the Munich Royal Academy of Fine Arts and studied painting and graphics with Angelo Jank and later became a member of the Munich Secession. He lived in Munich and exhibited his paintings every year in the glass palace and in the fire on June 6, 1931 of which 4,000 works of art were destroyed and severely damaged, including several paintings by Besta. Together with Karl Anton Rohan , Alois Dempf and Leopold Ziegler , he campaigned for the Christian Democratic idea of ??the Paneuropa Union and in 1931 co-founded the journal Deutsche Europa. He published some of his pictures in the Munich weekly magazine Jugend 1921-1939. He lived 1933-1939 in his studio in Schwabing , Ainmillerstrasse 13, then moved to Berlin in 1940. There he painted the picture Rococo society in front of an orangery of the castle Sanssouci . In 1941 he returned to Schwabing with his wife and lived there until the end of his life. His resting place is on the Munich forest cemetery .
