WILLIAMS, John (1796-1839). A Narrative of Missionary Enterprises in the South Sea Islands ... First American Edition. New York: D. Appleton & Co., [c. 1837]. 8vo. Wood-engraved vignette on title, folding engraved map of Polynesia, wood-engraved illustrations, some fully-page (occasional spotting and staining). Original cloth decorated in blind, spine gilt (hole in spine, rubbed). Provenance: Amos W. Dana (early signature [?stamp] on front free endpaper); Belfast Free Library (label and blindstamp on title). The author was killed and eaten by cannibals in the New Hebrides in 1839. With 2 other works of related interest in 3 vols., namely John Martin's An Account of the Natives of the Tonga Islands (London, 1817, 2 vols., ?lacking map, modern patterned boards) and Manley Hopkins's Hawaii: The Past, Present, and Future of its Island-Kingdom (New York, 1869, later half calf, 2nd edition).
