The son of Sir John Hill, 3rd Bt. and Mary, daughter and co-heir of John Chambre, of Petton, Sir Rowland had a distinguished military career. He fought in the Peninsular War, serving under Wellington in Spain, and was awarded the Grand Cross of the Bath, and subsequently elevated to the Peerage in 1814, as Baron Hill, of Almarez and of Hawkestone, Salor, and in 1816, of Hardwicke. Sir Rowland was Commander-in-Chief of the Army from 1828 until 1842, when he was created a Viscount. He retired to Hardwick Grange and became an enthusiastic sportsman.
