signed with initials 'wrb' (lower left) and with inscription 'My Dear Sir I have this day sent off the drawing I promised Mrs Nelson it is a bright sunset in contrast to the storm I call it a 'Misty Sunset Hastings'. I hope it will be liked With best wishes Yours truly WR Beverly' (on a letter from the artist attached to the backboard).

William's father, a north country actor named William Roxby assumed the surname of Beverly in honour of the minster town in Yorkshire. This may account for William's inconsistent spelling of his name, uncertain as to whether it should be Beverly or Beverley. As a young artist he would go out sketching with Clarkson Stanfield, R.A. (1793-1867). He is best known for his highly competent and atmospheric views of shipping and coast scenery in which the influence of Richard Parkes Bonington (1802-1828) can be clearly seen.
