William James Bennett (English/American, 1784-1844), "City of Charleston, South Carolina, Looking Across Cooper's River", 1838, aquatint laid on paper, after the painting by George Cooke, sheet 19 1/2 in. x 27 1/2 in Note: Born in England in 1784, William James Bennett received his training at the Royal Academy and emigrated to the United States in 1826. He is best known for the high quality of his aquatint engravings. This print, along with views of Niagara Falls, the Hudson Valley, and port cities of Buffalo and Charleston, was published at the beginning of an important period of American topographical view-making.
