(William) Ian Brinkworth M.B.E. studied art at The Slade and prior to World War II taught at both Westminster School of Art and also at The East Anglian School of Painting & Drawing. After the war he pursued a career with the British Colonial Administrative Service in Nigeria during which time he became an authority on African tribal art, on returning to Britain he became a successful writer under the nom de plume Ian Brook.
