WILLIAM HENRY DRAKE (American, 1856-1926) Original unpublished manuscript of profusely illustrated book, A Trip Around the World, circa 1900 Pen and ink Octavo Sizes vary Each illustration is signed by the noted author-illustrator Both a painter and an illustrator, William Henry Drake was a pupil of the Julien Academy in Paris, studying under Benjamin Constant and Doucet. He returned to New York in 1878 and gained employment as a free lance pen and ink artist for such periodicals as Harper's. Showing precise draughtsmanship in such diverse fields as animal studies, still lifes, landscapes and depictions of antique silver and bronzes, Drake's pen and ink drawings were in great demand during the 1880's and 1890's. Around the turn of the century, he also received commissions to illustrate books, including Stories of Child Life and The Book of the Jungle, by Kipling. Will H. Drake was elected an Associate of the prestigious National Academy in 1902.
