Notes

William Hawkins was born in rural Kentucky in 1895 and later moved to Columbus, Ohio. He held a number of jobs, drove a truck and even ran a brothel. While he began painting as early as the 1930s, the style for which he is best known developed in the 1970s. Interestingly, both works here illustrate his developed style; the first (lot 713) however, was executed with inexpensive found materials like semi-gloss and enamel paint thrown out by the local hardware store. The subsequent picture (lot 714) was completed when he could afford to purchase materials his of choice.
