William Gale first visited the Holy Land in the autumn of 1862, when he stayed in Nazareth; he returned to the region in 1867. Like his contemporary William Webbe, Gale specialised in biblical genre which owed much to his direct experience of the East but was also infused with a Victorian romanticism. Gale employed a Pre-Raphaelite technique, often painting on a wet white ground to enhance the luminosity of his colour palette.
