The genealogical journal begins with the generation of Kilburn's grandparents William & Elizabeth (née Brown) Kilburn. The first entry is credited 'Written by Thomas Brown Esq. of Tooting' in ink; Brown (1742-1822) was Elizabeth's father and Kilburn's maternal great grandfather. With approximately 176 pages, the journal traces the history of the Kilburn Family from as early as William de Kilburn, Lord of Kilburn (d.1233), 'one of the proudest Barons of the 13th Century' (p.150), to the early 1900s. The page numbers incorporated in the following list of depicted family members refer to those in the journal.

William Kilburn (1803-1864): One plate daguerreotype (fig.A), 1844, with ink manuscript label 'taken in 1844 when W.E.K was an amateur'. An early outdoor portrait made by Kilburn, at the age of 26, of his uncle, William II. Also a 1/4 plate daguerreotype (fig.B), 1850s, hand-tinted, showing backdrop with the blue sky and white clouds, which was typical of Kilburn's studio portraits (p.3).
Benjamin Kilburn (1807-1856): One plate daguerreotype (fig.D), c.1844, with ink manuscript label 'Benjamin Kilburn Brother of Thos. Kilburn'. An early portrait of Kilburn's uncle, Benjamin, the youngest brother of Thomas (Kilburn's father), showing a plain cloth drape as backdrop, before his studio set-up (pp.3, 14).
Catherine Kilburn (1787-1874): 3 plate daguerreotypes, 1850s, identitfied 'Mrs. Thos. Kilburn' in ink on reverse of backing paper. Unusual group of daguerreotype copies after a single monochromatic miniature portrait of Kilburn's mother (p.12).
Fanny Corbett Kilburn (1813-1868): 2 plate and 2 1/4 plate (fig.E) daguerreotype copies after a single miniature portrait (signed and dated '1855') of Kilburn's sister, c.1855 (pp.12, 54).
William Edward Kilburn: One plate daguerreotype copy after a miniature portrait (sigend and dated '1854') of Kilburn himself, c.1854, identitfied 'W.E. Kilburn son of Thos. Kilburn' in ink on reverse of backing paper.
Charles Kilburn (1820-1889): One plate daguerreotype, c.1844; one 1/4 plate daguerreotype, 1850s, hand-tinted, identified 'Charles Kilburn son of Thos. Kilburn' in ink on reverse of backing paper; one plate and 2 plate daguerreotype copies after a single miniature portrait (signed and dated '1854') of Kilburn's brother, c.1854 (pp.12, 57).
Ellen Catherine Kilburn (later Godby) (1827-1895): One plate daguerreotype copy after a miniature portrait (signed and dated '1854') of Kilburn's younger sister, c.1854, with ink manuscript label 'Mrs. Godby or Miss F.R.?' (pp. 12, 60).
Eliza Campbell Kilburn (1830-1871) & William Dunbar Kilburn (1856-1913): One stereoscopic daguerreotype (fig.C), 1850s, hand-tinted, identitfied 'Mrs. H.W. Kilburn' in ink on reverse of backing paper. A beautifully hand-tinted portrait of Kilburn's sister-in-law and wife of his brother Henry Ward. Also a plate daguerreotype (fig.F), c.1857, hand-tinted, with printed visiting card 'Miss Campbell' inscribed 'W. Dunbar Kilburn Esquire wishes you to know of being 1 year's age when in Edinburgh' in pencil. William Dunbar was Kilburn's nephew and eldest son of Henry Ward & Eliza Campbell (p.55).
Also, three other daguerreotype portraits of unidentified sitters and a plate still life of a stuffed game bird on a book, c.1844.
