Item Overview

Description

oil/canvas, laid down on board, 24" x 20", signed with monogram and dated. Dobson was a pupil of Edward Opie, and entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1836. He later taught at the Government School of Design. He was also Headmaster at the Birmingham School from 1843-45, when he went to Italy. He also spent some time in Germany, where he came under the influence of the Nazarenes. He was elected A.R.A. and R.A. in 1860 and 1871 and Associate and Member of the O.W.S. in 1870 and 1875. His work is simple, if sentimental and he strongly objected to the use of bodycolour.
