Description

WILLIAM BROCAS RHA (c.1794-1868) Thoroughbred horses, standing in a landscape Oil on canvas, a pair, 66 x 77cm Born in Dublin, the third son of the painter Henry Brocas and brother of Henry Jnr and Samuel, also artists. He is perhaps best known for his landscapes and portraits but distinguished himself in the art of equestrian portraiture, working in oils and watercolour. He was also a capable engraver. Walter Strickland records that Brocas practiced in Dublin, exhibiting at the Society of Artists in Dublin and at the Royal Hibernian Academy where he became a member in 1860, becoming President of the Society of Irish Artists in 1843.
