Notes

William Armfield Hobday was born in Birmingham, where his self-portrait (1814) hangs in the City Museum and Art Gallery. He worked in London, Bath and Bristol and exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and the British Institution between 1794 and 1830. His patrons included, among others, the Rothschild family for whom he painted a similarly large group portrait of Nathan Meyer Rothschild and his family which was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1821
