NOTE: This painting will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné of the works of Willard L. Metcalf by Ira Spanierman and Richard J. Boyle. This early work by Metcalf predates his period of study in France. It is similar in handling to his 1877 painting on board entitled "Cloudy Day, York Beach" (6-1/4 x 10-1/2 inches, collection of Molly Armstrong), reproduced in Elizabeth de Veer and Richard Boyle, Sunlight and Shadow.
