Schilder Monumenta Cartographica VII, 12.5

Notes

Rare and highly decorative map extending from the northern border of modern-day Western Sahara to the Equator and including all of West Africa. This map was compiled by Luis Teixera and S. Rovelasco, and it was engraved for Cornelis Claeszoon I, for his edition of Pieter de Marees' Beschrijvinge van Guinea... (1602), although no known copy of the work contains it. All known examples are reissues by Hugo Allard (active between 1645 and 1691) or his son Carel, as here. "this map [is] one of the most beautiful products of the Dutch engraver's art from the years around 1600" (Schilder).
