Item Overview

Description

This world map is entitled A New Map of the Terraqueous Globe according to the ancient Discoveries and most general Divisions of it into Continents and Oceans and was Edward Wells and engraved by Michael Burghers. It was published after 1718 by Edward Wells in Oxford and London. The map was first published in 1700.

This is a charming double hemisphere world map. There is a legend in North America that references some people's belief that it was ancient Atlantis. It shows California as an island, no Great Lakes, and no Mississippi River. This is the last map that shows California as an island (from the original publication date). It shows an incomplete New Holland attached to New Guinea, partial New Zealand coast, and no Southern Continent.

Michael Burghers (1653-1727) was a Dutch illustrator, engraver, and artist that was predominantly based in England. He studied under and succeeded David Loggan as Engraver to the University.

Edward Wells (1667-1727) was a clergyman, mathemetician, and geographer. He was a teacher to William, Duke of Gloucester. The duke died at the young age of 11 and thus Wells dedicated this map to him.
