Item Overview

Description

Wells (Herbert George, 1866-19466). Experiment in Autobiography, Discoveries and Inclusions of a Very Ordinary Brain (Since 1866), vol. 1 only (of 2), 1st ed., 1934, b&w plts. from photos, a little spotting, initialled presentation copy to Enid Bagnold on half-title (somewhat spotted), 'To Enid on the High Horse, from HG', a few marks by Bagnold in blue felt tip, marginal lines to emphasise text on page 18 and the marginal note VG on page 94 against the printed text 'I have never believed in the superiority of the inferior', and with Bagnold's further notes to front and rear endpapers, '94, 98, 198 (v. pleasant), 18 & 21, to answer Cuthbert!' and '1971, I can't get about v. much. The only 1st class thing I can do is to write ...', the rest somewhat difficult to read but implying that H. G. Wells gave her the two volumes possibly in 1934 but since then one volume is loss, orig. cloth gilt, spine faded and sl. dampstained with a little fraying to spine ends, 8vo. From the sale of Enid Bagnold's effects at North End House, Rottingdean, Sussex. The allusion by Wells is presumably to Bagnold's book 'National Velvet'. (1)
