Item Overview

Description

Wedig, Gottfried von
Cologne 1583 - 1641 - and workshop- attributed

Variety of Still-Lifes with Cheese, Fruit and Wine.
Oil on wood. Parquetted. 51 x 73cm. Framed.

Gottfriend von Wedig, born and active in Cologne, is counted among painters Georg Flegel, Isaac Soreau and Peter Binoit, of the style coming out of the so-called Frankfurt School.
Having been very successful in portraiture, he turned towards still-lifes in 1630.

In the present respectively ostentatious still-life, the painter ventures (at least in the left half of the painting) into a seemingly fragile composition. A tazza overloaded with fruit (grapes and peaches) is placed on a small pewter plate that in turn has to balance a wine filled Roemers (right), an apple and an olive (left) on its rim. The Raerener pitcher, foreground left, is pushed slightly over the edge of the table and threatens to fall over. The right half of the table is considerably calmer depicting slices of cheese, tin cans, bread and a porcelain bowl filled with strawberries. All of these various items, fruit and baked goods are found repeatedly in Gottfried von Wedig's paintings.
