Lot 1278: WATSON, JOHN B.

1278. JOHN B. WATSON (1878-1958) American psychologist and a leading exponent, codifier, and popularizer of behaviorism. An especially rare bound printing, 20pp. 4to., of his controversial thesis first published by The Psychological Review, Vol. XX, March 1913, entitled "Psychology as the Behaviorist Sees It". On the cover, Watson writes a historically important description (not signed), reading: "Here is where I broke away from the old psychology. Since this article I have not been a very popular man!". And rightfully so. Watson, then a professor and director of the psychological laboratory at Johns Hopkins University, basically discounted as obsolete all previous theories of psychology except behaviorism!
