signed and dated W Field 1882 l.r.; signed, inscribed with title and the artist's address on a label on the frame, oil on canvas 99.5 by 153 cm.; 39 1/4 by 60 1/4 in. Walter Field was the youngest son of Edwin Wilkins Field and his second wife Letitia, nee Kinder. He was born at Windmill Hill, Hampstead and was to live in Hampstead for the rest of his life. After leaving University College School, Field studied painting under John Rogers Herbert R.A. and engraving with John Pye. He established himself as an artist working successfully in both oils and watercolours and painting landscapes, outdoor figure subjects and the occasional portrait. He exhibited widely in London with a total of 42 pictures shown at the Royal Academy. A great lover of nature, Field worked tirelessly to preserve the natural beauties of his home environment of Hampstead Heath and was a founder member of the Hampstead Heath Protection Society. He died in 1901 at his home The Pryers, East Heath Road, Hampstead. A drinking fountain was erected on the heath in his memory.
