Large 2° (575 x 410mm). With half-title and errata. Title-vignette on india paper, engraved map hand-coloured in outline, and 21 plates on india paper on 20 sheets. (Some spotting, generally not affecting the plates, a few short marginal tears, errata leaf repaired in the bottom margin). 20th-century green quarter leather and cloth (light scuffing to extremities).

FIRST EDITION. THE FIRST EUROPEAN ACCOUNT OF THE MAYAN SITES AT UXMAL, for which Waldeck won the Société de Géographie medal. Illustrated with excellent lithographs on india paper showing the region's inhabitants, elevations of temples, and some of the antiquities Waldeck brought back. The project was supported by Edward King, Viscount Kingsborough, and was to have been the third of three monographs on ancient Mexico based on Waldeck's researches. This volume appeared first 'in order to forestall piracy of Waldeck's drawings and notes, a large quantity of which had been confiscated by the Mexican authorities prior to his departure for Europe' (RIBA).
